How going sugar free will make you healthier

Posted by: Patrick Catanzariti on February 9, 2016

There are many health implications of eating too much sugar, from increased body fat to unhealthy skin. The good news, however, is that by quitting sugar, most related problems can be reversed. It might be hard quitting at first, but the health benefits that come with this lifestyle change will make it more than worth it. Want to know more about the health benefits of quitting sugar – you’re in the right place.

Weight loss
Being overweight can cause all sorts of health problems, from diabetes to heart disease. That’s why it’s so important that you make every effort to ensure you weigh a healthy amount for your height and frame. Sugar is incredibly fattening, so it’s no surprise that quitting it can help you to shed a few pounds. If you’re overweight or are prone to weight gain, the best thing you can do is quit sugar.

Healthier skin
The inflammation that sugar causes in the body can lead to skin breakouts. Cutting sugar out of your diet will really help out your skin if you’re prone to acne and other blemishes. While it may be a change that takes time to adjust to, your skin will be clearer and healthier for making it.

Plus, by cutting sugar out of your diet, you’ll also be less prone to premature aging. You see, sugar causes damage to the skin’s collagen and elastin by ‘eating’ it. It can also leave your skin more prone to sun damage, the leading cause of premature aging.

More energy
You may not realise it, but should you choose to go sugar-free, your energy levels will increase. The reason for this is simple; when we eat sugar, our blood sugar levels rise giving us an energy boost. However, they quickly drop again. It’s these ‘sugar spikes’ that cause us to feel full of energy one minute and exhausted the next. However, by quitting sugar, you’ll keep your body’s sugar levels, and thus your energy levels, stable.

Reduced anxiety
Who knew sugar could wreak havoc on our mental health? While studies are yet to work out what the reason behind this is, if you suffer from anxiety or high-stress levels, sugar can worsen the problem. What you’ll find by quitting sugar is that your anxiety symptoms will lessen, and you’ll be better able to cope with stress.
