Who doesn’t love going out for a meal? Whether it’s to celebrate, or just to get out of the kitchen for a night, going to your favourite restaurant is always a treat.
But how can you make sure that this treat doesn’t turn into a sugar-laden trap? We’ve put together some top tips to help you make healthier choices when out for dinner, so you can enjoy your meal without the sugar.
1. If you can, check out the menu before you leave home. If there are no healthy options, choose somewhere else to go!
2. Don’t be afraid to ask. Kitchens will usually be happy to accommodate any healthier requests you might have, like asking for fish grilled not fried, or for steamed vegetables instead of chips.
3. Don’t turn up already starving: have a healthy snack few hours before you go out to avoid eating the entire bread basket within minutes of your arrival.
4. On that note: bread is not only packed with added kilojoules, but it can spoil your main meal. Limit how much you eat before your main meal arrives.
5. Order extra veggies. They’ll fill you up, so you eat less of the bad stuff, and make sure you get your five serves a day!
6. Drink water throughout the meal to slow you down and give your body time to realise it’s full.
7. Skip the fancy cocktails, which are a sure sugar hit. Instead, choose light beer, wine, or vodka and tonic.
