While most of Britain was surprised by Chancellor George Osborne’s soft drink sugar levy, the “shocked and surprised” celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver – who was waiting outside parliament- admitted that the move would not solve our childhood obesity crisis.
Oliver does however believe that the levy is a “holistic approach that will make a difference to our kid’s health”, further avowing that the tax will play a pivotal role in a childhood obesity strategy.
Through his obesity strategy, Oliver proposed that 20 pence sugar tax would raise around £1 billion worth of revenue. Revenue that he recommended is reinvested into the NHS and into schools to tackle obesity and diet related disease.
The sugar levy that the government announced however will generate less than this, around £5 million worth of revenue, which will be spent doubling the funding for sport in primary schools.
