Sharing the sugar free love this christmas

Christmas time is about getting together with the ones we love, celebrating the year past and eating more food than we ever thought possible (or so my family believes). Now, I’m all up for a good feast, especially when it’s wholesome, however I appreciate that Christmas season is glittered with all delights definitely NOT sugar free.

What’s a girl to do? Here’s my sugar free (or reduced sugar if you prefer) guide to the festive season.

  1. Firstly, be conscious of what and when you are eating. Not saying that you have to decline Aunty Joan’s long awaited Fruit Mince tarts, but appreciate them for all the goodness they are – stop, take a moment and savour the delectable flavour sensation. By being mindful of what you’re eating, you’ll not only enjoy it more but you’ll also eat less.
  2. Treat your family and friends to sensational sugar free sweets – we have more recipes than you can poke a stick at under in our Sweeter Life recipe section, so half the work is taken care of for you. Tip: Don’t tell them it’s sugar free, gluten free or anything-free. There’s often a predisposition against ‘healthy’ options (boyfriends and fathers the worst offenders). Just tell them you made it with love, and serve with a big smile. This also works because then you have a healthy option for yourself too. Win win! 
  3. Appreciate that drinks have sugar too. What?! Yes. Fruit drinks, soft drinks (duh), cocktails, champagne, punch, cider, wine…. the list goes on. You want to know how much sugar water has in it? Zero. Yes, you don’t get that zing but you will get the hydration your body often needs after a long day of chatting about your second cousins last holiday across Europe. If you’re wanting a little flavour, add a touch of gourmet to your glass by adding fruit pieces. Strawberries, orange, lime and mint are my go-to’s.

And there you have it. By simply being conscious of your eating, sharing wholesome food and limiting sugar filled beverages (in favour of your new favourite strawberry / lime and sparkling water combo, of course), you can successfully sail through the silly season without bringing along all that nasty sugar. Think of it as your christmas gift to your body – and after a year of all your adventures, i’m sure it needs it.
