Hands up if you’ve got a friend or co-worker raving about their low carb diet at the moment?

It’s the newest diet trend going around – or is it? Low carbohydrate diets in one form or another have actually been around since the 1970’s.

So what’s the big deal? Well, research has found that a diet lower in carbohydrates and higher in healthy fats doesn’t just only help you lose weight, it can also help prevent obesity, heart disease and diabetes. And we’re a fan because low carb also means reducing your sugar intake, which we are definitely all about!

If you hear ‘high fat’ and panic, you’re not alone! For so long we’ve heard that all fat is bad, and that low-fat is the way to go to be healthy. Experts are now recommending that we move away from restricting fat intake and instead eat fewer processed foods and refined carbohydrates.

Okay, you think, where’s the catch? And more importantly, how on earth can you reduce your carb intake?

The key is that not all fats and carbs are created equal. ‘High fat’ doesn’t mean you can eat as much bacon as you want – and ‘low carb’ still means you need to eat your vegies! Your body needs some carbohydrates because this is where it gets its energy.

The first step is to reduce your intake of processed carbohydrates. This includes things like white bread, cakes and biscuits, and sugary or sweetened foods. Unprocessed, whole foods like legumes and whole grains are fine, as well as most vegies.

As for fats, focus on including good fats in your diet, not trans fats. Good sources of healthy fats are oily fish like salmon and tuna, avocados, nuts, natural peanut butter, soymilk and tofu. Steer clear of processed food like prepackaged snacks and deep fried takeaway, as while these are fatty they’re certainly not healthy!

      I have been low carbing for 5 months as a diabetic and don’t miss out on much. I make my own wraps and pasta and desserts using natvia regularly.
      The other half has joined me and uses natvia regularly now.
      We couldn’t live without natvia in all its forms in our household it really is a great sugar substitute when you low carb

      Still didn’t find out the answer to my question after a lot of hedging around, still no definite answer which was does Natvia contain carbs? and if so how many. Would appreciate an answer.
