Share the gift of knowledge with your special someone with our romantic Valentine’s Day facts:

Chocolate has been associated with Valentine’s Day since the 1880’s, when the first Valentine’s Day heart shaped chocolate box was invented by Richard Cadbury.

73% of people who buy flowers on the special day are men.

Not much is actually known about Saint Valentine, and it is thought that the inspiration behind the holiday could in fact have come from the story of two different men.

One version of the story behind the day takes place during the Roman Empire. Claudius II didn’t want men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.”

Although it has a reputation for having been invented by Hallmark, the holiday dates back well before the card company. King Henry VII declared February 14th an official holiday in 1537. Hallmark didn’t start making Valentine’s Day cards until 1913.

Plenty of us turn to chocolate if we’re feeling blue, but if we were living in the 1800’s it might have been on doctor’s orders! Physicians used to prescribe chocolate as a cure for heartbreak.

Do you love your furry friend more than most people? 3% of pet owners give Valentine’s Day pressies to their pets.

Actors Freddie Highmore and Simon Pegg, as well as singer Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 all have their birthdays on Valentine’s Day. That calls for double the cake!

It’s not all about love! Other events that have fallen on February 14th include:
1876: Alexander Graham Bell applies for patent for the telephone
1895: Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ opens in London
1966: Australian currency is decimalised, no longer uses Australian pounds
1967: Aretha Franklin records ‘Respect’
2005: YouTube is launched by a group of college students. It will eventually become the largest video sharing site in the world.
