What are you waiting for? How to be happier, right now.

What are you waiting for? How to be happier, right now.

How often do you hear ‘I’ll be happy when….. I’m skinnier… I have a boyfriend who adores me like my sister…. when I can finally afford an amazing trip to Santorini, Mykonos AND Paris like the every single other person on the planet’? Chances are, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard it all before. And it echoes in your mind and makes you think – what will make my life better? If this is sounding all too familiar, then this post is for you.

Here at Natvia we are about healthy eating (pretty sure you get that), but equally important is a healthy mind. And a healthy mind is one that acknowledges that happiness isn’t a destination, it’s a way of life. It’s not just going to come arrive at your doorstep like your 6:30pm Uber driver to take you to dinner. Rather, happiness is how we see things – it’s our attitude, our beliefs, and most importantly, a choice that we make each and every day.

See, taking responsibility for our happiness is a challenge. It’s easier to say ‘I’ll be happier later’ as it means we don’t ‘have’ to be happy now. We can complain about how we never feel good enough. We have an excuse for snapping at our mums as she kindly asks how our days were. And we can justify not being fully joyful in the moment of right now, slaving away at another uni assignment, working overtime again or going to another event for your boyfriends’-sisters-best friends-cousins-dog, which you had to attend or risk hearing about it for the next three weeks.

On the flip side, when we decide that now is the only moment we have power over, and that if we want to be happy, then the time is now, we empower ourselves beyond our wildest imaginations. Happiness is found in the essence of this moment – the pleasure of a conversation, sharing a joke with your bestie or feeling inspired by your grandma.

All happiness is, is a choice. In every scenario we are faced with, every person, every fraction of time. We can seek out the goodness in every situation and feel incredible, regardless of if we are sitting on a bus heading to a 12 hour shift at that retail job, or if we are at home creating a delicious raw carrot cake and ‘tasting’ the mixture every 3.5 seconds. Like I said, this is not an easy task or something that will happen overnight. But the more we focus on the good, the better we feel, and the more goodness you experience. It’s a spiral upwards which just keeps getting better with every day that passes.

So go, and feel amazing. You have everything you need to make it possible – right here, right now.
