You’ve heard it all before. ‘It’s the most important meal of the day!’ We know we should eat breakfast. We’ve been told since we were kids we need to eat breakfast. And science agrees. Breakfast refuels you after a night without food, and means you’ll snack less during the day. Regular breakfast eaters also manage their weight better.
But what if you just aren’t hungry when you wake up?
It seems strange to not be starving after about eight hours without food, but many people don’t feel like eating first thing in the morning. We investigate why this is, and what it means for a healthy diet.
There can be a few reasons why you don’t immediately reach for the cereal in the morning:
You’ve eaten too much the night before. A heavy meal before going to sleep won’t be digested fully much before you wake up in the morning. Your body won’t know that it needs more food because it’s only just finished dealing with the last meal. Eating too much before bed can also disrupt your sleep, as your body works overtime to digest it.The solution: make sure you stop eating a few hours before you sleep, to give your body time to digest properly.
Your metabolism is still asleep. When we sleep, our metabolisms enter a different mode. This is fine while we’re sleeping, because we don’t use that much energy. Once we wake up, however, our bodies can take some time to realise that we’re up and using up energy again. The solution: eat something within an hour or so of waking up. It doesn’t have to be large, or even breakfast food! Just something nutritious that will get your metabolism up and going. Think foods high in protein to fill you up, and whole grains for long lasting energy.
Habit. Yep. If you don’t eat breakfast, you just won’t be in a routine where you’ll feel hungry upon waking up.The solution: Start introducing breakfast into your morning routine. Start small if need be – your body will soon begin to learn it needs food first thing.
The take home message is that you do need to eat in the morning, even if you don’t feel like you want to! So have something to eat within the first few hours of the day. Your body will thank you.
