Natvia is a natural sweetener derived from both the stevia plant and monk fruit, offering a wholesome alternative to traditional sugar. With zero calories and a low glycemic index, Natvia enables you to indulge in sweetness without compromising your health goals. Whether you're stirring it into your morning coffee or baking up a storm in the kitchen, Natvia is your companion for delicious, sugar-free living. Among the natural sweeteners available in the market, Stevia and Monk Fruit are the two most used as alternatives for sugar.
Stevia is a natural sweetener that’s derived from the leaves of the South American shrub Stevia rebaudiana. This plant-based sweetener can be extracted from one of two compounds called glycosides (stevioside and rebaudioside A). These compounds don’tcontain any calories, are about 250-300 times sweeter than sugar, and may taste slightly different than sugar.
To make stevia sweeteners, the glycosides must be extracted from the leaves. Beginning with dry leaves that have been steeped in water, the process is as follows:
- Leaf particles are filtered out from the liquid.
- The liquid is treated with activated carbon to remove additional organic matter.
- The liquid undergoes an ion exchange treatment to remove minerals and metals.
- The glycosides that remain are concentrated into a resin.
- What remains is concentrated stevia leaf extract, which is spray dried and ready to be processed into sweeteners.
Alternative methods also exist, including enzymatic conversion of stevia leaf extract and fermentation from sugar using genetically modified yeast.
Keep in mind that many stevia products contain additional ingredients, such as fillers, sugar alcohols, other sweeteners, and natural flavours.
Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo, is a native plant from China. Its sweet extract is obtained from the Siraitiagrosvenorii plant. This sweetness comes from compounds called mogrosides, primarily mogroside V. Even though monk fruit is about 300 times sweeter than table sugar, it doesn’tcontain any calories. According to traditional Chinese medicine, S. grosvenorii has a cooling nature and sweet taste and possesses heat clearing, lung moistening, phlegm removing and other properties.
Studies found that mogrosides regulate lipid metabolism and exert a prophylactic effect against diabetes-induced lipid metabolism disorders. There are also evidences on how the use of Monk Fruit extract sweetener aid weight loss.
The sweetener is created by removing the seeds and skin of the fruit and crushing it to collect the juice, which is then dried into a concentrated powder.
Monk fruit contains natural sugars, mainly fructose and glucose. However, unlike in most fruits, the natural sugars in monk fruit aren’t responsible for its sweetness. Instead, it gets its intense sweetness from unique antioxidants called mogrosides.
During processing, mogrosides are separated from the fresh-pressed juice. Therefore, monk fruit sweetener does not contain fructose or glucose.
Mogrosides are the primary active components of Siraitiagrosvenorii saponins, or monk fruits, and are 200–350-times sweeter than sucrose is. Owing to their high sweetness and nontoxic characteristic, mogrosides are widely used in beverages. Monk fruit received the US FDA food safety certification after clearing toxicology and food safety tests, and have been approved for use as food additives.
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol used as a low-calorie sweetener. Most sugar alcohols are found in small amounts in nature, especially in fruits and vegetables. Because of the way these molecules are structured, they can stimulate the sweet taste receptors on your tongue. However, erythritol appears to be quite different from the other sugar alcohols.
Synbiotics represent a combination of probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that add ‘good’ bacteria to your gut and can help aid digestion. Prebiotics feed the good bacteria in your gut. Scientists believe synbiotics may reduce gut inflammation and help relieve symptoms in people with, for example: IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), Travelers’Diarrhea, lactose intolerance, immune function, obesity and hyperglycemia.
With the combination of probiotics and prebiotics within the blended nutrients, Natvia’s probiotics helps:
- Support healthy gut bacteria growth.
- Improve digestion for kids and adults.
- Fight harmful microbes with natural substances.
- Help the body absorb cholesterol and regulate blood sugar.
- Contribute to overall organ health and function.
At the same time, the prebiotics mean to:
- Fuel good gut bacteria growth.
- Boost digestion and stool regularity.
- Strengthen the immune system against infections.
- Improve gut health and reduce inflammation.
- Keep harmful bacteria in check.
After fermentation, probiotic microorganisms turn into postbiotics. These compounds contribute to gut health, immune system regulation, and overall well-being, making them an essential component of a healthy lifestyle.
Our mission is to provide delicious, guilt-free sweetness to everyone, everywhere. We envision a world where people can enjoy the sweetness of life without compromising their health. The use of stevia and Monk Fruit extract help alternate table sugar in diets that support diabetic people. These natural sweeteners do not spike your blood sugar levels and alsocontainsvery little to no calories.
Natvia can help cut down on added sugar consumption, which could be especially beneficial for children.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), a higher intake of added sugar could increase children’s risk of heart disease by altering triglyceride and cholesterol levels and contributing to weight gain. Swapping added sugar for stevia could potentially minimize these risks.
Steviol glycosides like Reb A have been approved by the FDA. However, it’s especially important to monitor intake in kids. This is because it’s much easier for kids to reach the acceptable daily limit for stevia, which is 1.8 mg per pound of body weight (4 mg per kg) for both adults and children.
There is limited evidence exists on the safety of stevia during pregnancy.
However, animal studies suggest that this sweetener — in the form of steviol glycosides does not negatively impact fertility or pregnancy outcomes when used in moderation. Additionally, various regulatory agencies consider steviol glycosides safe for adults, including during pregnancy. Still, research on whole-leaf stevia and raw extracts is limited.
Therefore, during pregnancy, it’s best to stick to FDA-approved products that contain steviol glycosides rather than whole-leaf or raw products. In this case, Monk Fruit is a great alternative for sugar/stevia as it’s already approved.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should ensure they’re nourishing their babies well. It’s a good idea for to chat with a healthcare professional to see how Natvia fits into their diets.
The recommended daily intake of Natvia Sweetener can vary depending on the specific product and the type of stevia leaf extract used. It's important to check the individual product packaging for guidelines. Remember, Natvia is intensely sweet, so a little goes a long way. Moderation is key, as with any sweetener, to ensure a balanced diet.
It is evident that the use of natural sweeteners that naturally have less calories than table sugar and decrease the possibility of blood sugar spikes, however, misusing or overuse a large amount of sweeteners might lead to a higher craving for sugar/sweets in long-term diets.
