Happy National Donut Day. These Apple Donut Rings are our kind of celebration; crispy, golden rounds dusted in cinnamon sugar made with Natvia Gut Activation Sweetener (AU) / Natvia Synbiotic Sweetener (UK), ready in 25 minutes and completely vegan. Warm from the pan with a drizzle of hazelnut spread, they are hard to stop at one.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large apples
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 3 tablespoons Natvia Gut Activation Sweetener (AU) / Natvia Synbiotic Sweetener (UK), for dusting
  • Neutral oil, for shallow frying
  • Natvia Hazelnut Spread, to serve (optional)

Method:

  1. Slice the apples into rounds about 1cm thick. Use a small round cutter or a sharp knife to remove the core from each slice.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, cinnamon and milk until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Pour enough oil into a wide pan to reach about 2cm deep. Heat over medium until a small drop of batter sizzles on contact.
  4. Dip each apple ring into the batter, letting any excess drip off, then carefully lower it into the hot oil. Work in batches to avoid crowding.
  5. Fry for about 2 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Drain on a paper towel.
  6. While still warm, mix Natvia Gut Activation Sweetener (AU) / Natvia Synbiotic Sweetener (UK) with a generous pinch of cinnamon and toss the rings to coat.
  7. Serve immediately, with Natvia Hazelnut Spread on the side or drizzled over the top.
